Today was a good day.
The bus system of the TTC got me to work on time, with a total transit time of 1:10 minutes (Door to Door).
I got to my cubicle. Its more rectangular than square, so it really is a rectangular prison, ops prism.
I got my coffee and then settled into the morning email ritual.
The SOM (service oriented midleware) in the SOA (service oriented architecture) had failed over six time, and people were panicking and it was now MY job to find out WHAT and WHY it happened and FIX it.
I drank my coffee. This had waited two days for me to get this email, it can wait another twenty minutes.
I sent an email about the problem, asking the person who manages this system to run three commands and return the output to me for analysis because I'm not allowed to do anything on the system.
I went back to drinking coffee and reading email. I logged into facebook. I logged into google hangouts. I got a reply from the system owner. This must be a REAL problem because the response time was under 30 minutes.

I spent the rest of the day playing email tag trying to get information about what the system is doing.

It's a miracle that I can do my job some days. Today was one of those miracle days.

All is now happy in SOA land. For now.

One year, when I was a student, I got a holiday job at a large insurance corporation (name only hidden to protect my in-law who helped me get the job). The job lasted three weeks.

Week 1: I had to put a large number (10 000s) of files for insured people from a smaller company that they had recently acquired in alphabetical order. This was a full week of filing.

Week 2: I had to put the exact same group of files into numerical order by policy number. The same files! Making all of week one a waste. This again, was a full week of filing.

Week 3: I was told to shred the files that I had now spent two weeks filing in different ways. Making both week one and week two a waste. This took two days. The remaining three days were spent attending company holiday parties.

My worst job story is a combination of jobs working in warehouses. Between theatre gigs, I still had to pay the rent and eat, so I'd take what I could find. Stacking boxes isn't bad, though it gets old after eight hours a day, five days a week.

What was harder is getting along with all my coworkers, usually short-tempered guys who could only get jobs in warehouses. I've been yelled at, spat at, shoved, nicknamed cocksucker (In Filipino, which took awhile to figure out until the hand gestures gave it away).

The worst was a shelving unit warehouse. I filed hinges for eight hours a day, rounding off the corners. By the first lunch break on the first day, my brain was mush, so I really hoped I could find a friend in the lunchroom.

There were two groups of men huddled around those tables. The far corner was full of old timers: guys with white beards stained yellow by nicotine, hunched over, wrinkles on their wrinkles, silently eating their soup.

The tables I sat at were full of young guys my own age - late teens or very early twenties. Mostly they talked about their kids, their kids' angry mothers and their favourite sex trade workers (not their words).

I lasted a week.
